In all of our grilling planks both mini and gourmet we use sustainable harvesting hand selecting and cutting methods. We trim branches on big trees to open up shaded areas and allow more light for lower-level plants. We also remove cluttered groups trees around big trees so that the larger tree can keep growing. This “shelter wood” method creates a more evenly aged tree farm and we limit our harvest to branches and trees less than 9 inches in diameter. We do not use the lumber company’s “clear cutting” method, where all the trees in one area are cut down. What our local farmers in Maine do is trim and cut down trees that are affecting healthy trees, while keeping the good trees for subsequent generations.
