Tonya and The Mop Top

February 22, 2012

This Northwest native swears by a good pair of vintage boots and polka dots – and her style has recently caught the eye of Refinery29's "Next Big Style Blogger" contest! Read on to learn more about Tonya of The Mop Top.
Tonya and The Mop Top

We recently discovered Tonya's style blog, The Mop Top, when she entered Refinery29's Next Big Style Blogger contest (where we discovered Milk Teeths last year!). Her awesome style and gorgeous hair immediately had us hooked, and we had to learn more about her in this week's edition of Blog Love. Tonya's up against another of our favorite bloggers, Jinna of Grease and Glamour – so whoever you choose, head to Refinery29 to vote!

StyledOn: Tell us a little about yourself – how did you get into blogging?
Tonya Smith: My name is Tonya Smith, and I am the girl behind The Mop Top! I first got into blogging when I discovered Free People’s online site. I was instantly inspired and fell in love with the company.

SO: What is the style scene like in Spokane?
TS: Spokane has a mix of different styles. There are a lot of hip people who love shopping at thrift stores and enjoy vintage like me. These people are definitely very inspiring for me. But there are also a lot of people who don’t really care too much about their style.

SO: What are your style words to live by?
TS: Be yourself! Wear things that you love, not because other people do. Also, keep things simple.

SO: What is the most treasured item in your closet?
TS: My navy polka dotted Gap dress! I got it at a thrift store and I wear it all the time. It goes with everything, it’s a really great staple piece.

SO: What is the best thrift-store find you have ever scored?
TS: Well that Gap dress is one of them! I’ve found a Vintage Coach bag too. That was really exciting, but I don’t wear it as often.

SO: Is there something you think every woman should have in her wardrobe?
TS: A pair of vintage boots. They are so unique and I think they add character to any look.

SO: Do you have any tips for maintaining awesome style on a budget?
TS: Hit the thrift stores! They’re packed with vintage goodies and even brand name items at a great price. Also, make sure and find staple items that you can wear a variety of ways. My staple items include a pair of corduroy jeans, a floral dress, and vintage boots!

SO: Do you have any new goals for your blog this year?
TS: I don’t have any goals in specific, I just really put all that I can into what I do and then see what happens as a result! It’s such a fun hobby for me and I love all the exciting opportunities that come along with it! :)

SO: We love your blog and read it on a regular basis. Which blogs do you read the most?
TS: Thank you so much!! There is a long list of blogs that I read, so it’s really difficult for me to name them all. I enjoy Free People’s Bldg 25 blog a lot. It’s a great mix of style, music, art, and food inspiration. And like I said’s why I started my blog too!

SO: Tell us something about yourself that we might not expect.
TS: I used to play the trombone in band from 5th grade to my Sophomore year! I wish I still played too...
