Load up that Netflix queue, people! Halloween is around the corner...

7 Scary Movies You Haven't Seen Yet

There is nothing quite like curling up on the couch on a dark and stormy night with a big bowl of popcorn and a scary-ass movie. We've picked our favorites, both new and old, that make the cut as Halloween approaches. Check out our Fear Factor Index to see if you'll make it to the end.

FEAR FACTOR INDEX:
1: Take a nap.
2: Pay attention.
3: Hold your breath.
4: Cover your eyes.
5: Leave the room.

THE MOVIES:

The Hunger.  Fear Factor: 2

This 1980's vampire flick is oft overlooked, but stars heavy hitters Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon and David Bowie in some seriously StyledOn get-ups. Scary at times, sexy at others, with lots of good synth music, billowing curtains, and shoulder pads, too. Ooh la la!

Wolf Creek.  Fear Factor: 5

I consider myself a pretty tough chick when it comes to horror movies, but this one was tough for me. The story line follows three friends roadtripping their way through Australia, when their car breaks down. No biggie, friendly Aussie Mick Taylor stumbles upon them and offers to give them a lift to his auto shop, where he fixes their car and gives them a place to stay for the night. Nothing even remotely scary happens until about half way through this one, but once it starts, it doesn't let up. Rent if you dare...

Suspiria.  Fear Factor: 4

Yes, you may have heard of this one from that movie about the girl who gets pregnant by Michael Cera and says really obnoxiously quippy things, but you should still give it a chance. The tagline is a little ridiculous ("The Only Thing More Terrifying Than The Last 12 Minutes Of This Film Are The First 92") as are the sets, but it is a scary/fun ride nonetheless, with creepy creatures, ballerinas, and witches.

Creepshow 2.  Fear Factor: 3

The Creepshow franchise gets a bad rap 'cause it's so incredibly budget, but give it a chance. This one warms up with a softball, "Old Chief Wood'nhead" tells the story of a Native American statue come to life and ready for revenge. Next up is "The Raft," adapted from a Stephen King story about four teenagers stranded on a wooden raft in a lake by a deadly floating blob (no more Rainier beer for these guys!). The third is the scariest, called "The Hitchhiker," about a homeless man trying to catch a ride who won't leave the sassy adultress driver alone. Buckle your seatbelts kids!

Sleepaway Camp.  Fear Factor 3.

Yeah, it's true, Friday the 13th did a much better job of the scary summer camp thing, but all I can say about this movie is you have to stick with it to the end. The plot twist is too good to be true.

The Ruins. Fear Factor 4.

A lot of people will scoff at this selection but it is worth seeing. The premise is a little silly (Mayan ruins mysterious lead to tourists' demise) but the special effects are out of sight, the suspense techniques are on point, and everyone is better-than-average-looking. So try it.

The Fog.  Fear Factor 4.

There are 3 versions of The Fog: John Carpenter's 1980 original which we reccommend here, the 2005 remake with Selma Blair, and a 2003 Bollywood version that "draws heavily" from I Know What You Did Last Summer (random, we know). The JC original stars Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis and has some serious spooks. Adrienne Barbeau is a show-stopper as the sexy radio host who tries to save the town via the airwaves as she realizes that this isn't any old Fog.

If I may, i would like to add 1997's Event Horizon starring Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne. It's a terrifying tale about a ship that disappears into deep space and comes back possessed 7 years later by the place it disappeared to: Hell. Definitely the most horrifying sci-fi/suspense/horror film of all time with tons of gore to boot. I'm a horror buff and its takes a lot to scare me, but that film gave me nightmares for weeks. I give it a 5, even though there is no way you would be able to leave the room. You'd be too scared!
