Chandra and Leigh are back with a brilliant sophomore album.
We first met The Watson Twins when they accompanied Jenny Lewis on her album, Rabbit Fur Coat, but if you haven't checked the duo out for their own merits, the release of Talkin To You, Talking To Me on Tuesday is the perfect opportunity.
The album is, in a word, awesome. The girls' upbringing in Louisville, Kentucky (and the fact that the demo for the album was recorded in a remote cabin near Yosemite) does bring a certain country twang and reverb to the music à la Neko Case, but there are also hints of Sade, Ben Kweller, Feist, and Fiona Apple at times. The songs are well written and beautifully sung, and there is a diversity of their sound from track to track that we haven't heard from the lovely duo yet. "Snow Canyons" is a beautiful long-distance love ballad (Valentine's Day mixtape material, people!), and "Harpeth River" is a standout for it's unusual jazz funk leanings. "Calling Out" is a little Carly Simon, and the album rounds out with 'U-N-Me," which could have been produced by Jeff Lynne and showcases the girls' powerful voices.
Definitely one to pick up, Talking To You, Talking To Me is easy listening in the best possible way, and firmly cements The Watson Twins as a duo to watch and keep listening to.
