Best of Brooklyn: Huckleberry Bar

Tucked away on Grand Street in Williamsburg is a diamond in the rough.
It's a tradition with my girlfriends and me to hit a swanky, upscale bar every so often to celebrate our successes or complain about our love lives over dirty martinis. We have a few select spots that offer cozy tables and a chic crowd, and they all seem to be in downtown Manhattan. This would be no problem, except that over the course of the last six months we've all relocated from our beloved island to Brooklyn, and on weeknights are largely unenthused about hopping on the L and walking 12 blocks to shell out major cash on overpriced cocktails.
Enter Huckleberry Bar, conveniently located on a run-down strip of Grand Street in Williamsburg. Surrounded by laundromats, nail salons, trinket-shops and bodegas, this spot has it all: beautiful decor, kick-ass cocktails and a small but substantial menu of delicious food. The DJs play good tunes and the bar hosts awesome events like Monday Movie Nights (this week was Evil Dead 2) and a Halloween Party on Saturday with a costume contest.
The drink menu offers twists on standards like the Sidecar (Francet Cognac, Citronage, Fresh Lemon with a Sugar Rim) and a selection of seasonal concoctions as well (like spiked cider! perfect for the cold weather). I died over the tuna melt with capers and white cheddar, and the ham and beer-soaked Irish cheddar sandwich with pickled onions was also out of sight. If you're only a little hungry, try the snack menu with fun picks like boiled peanuts or pigs in a blanket (you know you love them!).
I adore Brooklyn and have no plans of moving back to Manhattan any time soon, but you can only run the hipster circuit of cheap beer in styrofoam cups with Smiths blaring in the background so many times before you need little break and a good stiff dose of vodka. Huckleberry delivers.
